Stewart Appointed to Committee Studying State Child Care Services

February 10, 2010

State Senator Jimmy Stewart (R-Albany) was recently appointed by Senate President Bill Harris to serve on a bipartisan panel charged with conducting a comprehensive review of publicly-funded child care services in Ohio.

The Committee to Study Publicly Funded Child Care Services was created in House Bill 1—the current two-year state operating budget—to evaluate Ohio’s process for funding child care services and its impact on children, families and providers across the state, including quality of care, number of children served and the availability of child care services in communities with high-poverty rates.

The 13-member panel is comprised of three members each from the House and Senate, a parent of a child in publicly-funded child care, two representatives from child care centers serving low-income areas and one representative each from the Ohio Association of Child Care Providers, the Ohio State Alliance of Young Men’s Christian Associations, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services and the Ohio Department of Education.

Sen. Stewart will represent the Senate on the committee along with State Senator Chris Widener (R-Springfield) and State Senator Teresa Fedor (D-Toledo).

“There are hundreds of skilled, hard-working child care providers across Ohio, but it is important that state leaders examine the system to identify possible areas where these services could be improved for children, families and providers in the state,” said Stewart. “I look forward to being part of these discussions as the committee meets in the coming weeks.”

The group must submit a report of its findings to the Governor and legislative leaders by June 30.

Wilson Files for Re-Election

February 8, 2010

Today, Congressman Charlie Wilson filed his petitions for candidacy for the 6th Congressional District. Wilson, first elected to the seat in 2006, is running for his third term. After filing his petitions, Congressman Wilson released the following statement:

“It has been one of the great honors of my life to represent the people of the 6th District. I was born in this area, raised my family here, and ran a successful local business here for over 40 years. I take the values and lessons that I’ve learned here to Washington with me each week. Though our country is facing difficult times, I know that applying Ohioans' common sense approach to our national problems will result in real progress and real solutions.

Our area faces many challenges, but among our largest is a lack of jobs. We need to get people back to work, and I will continue to do my part to make that happen. I pledge to keep working with our small businesses to expand their opportunities and allow for job creation. I will work with our universities and community colleges to expand workforce development opportunities. And I will continue to partner with economic development resources at the local, state, and federal level to show off our area’s people and products while expanding their business reach.

On a national level, we face a number of challenges as well. I will continue to work for specific national policies that I believe will help our area, our people, and our industries, but I also want to focus on our country’s long-term financial security. For me, that means taking a hard look at deficit spending. I take my role as a fiscally conservative Blue Dog Democrat seriously, and I look forward to coming up with common sense solutions that will not burden our children and grandchildren with outrageous debt.

I am asking the people of the 6th District for another term in Congress. They guide my work, my conscience and my actions, and I take the responsibility of representing them very seriously. I look forward to returning to Congress in order to continue fighting for the working families of our area.”

The 6th District covers 12 counties in Southeastern Ohio running along the Ohio River: Mahoning, Columbiana, Jefferson, Belmont, Monroe, Noble, Washington, Athens, Meigs, Gallia, Lawrence and Scioto.

Rep. Garrison Announces $254,000 in State Grants for Local Programs

February 8, 2010

Funds will improve area housing conditions, renovate Cambridge Developmental Center

State Representative Jennifer Garrison (D-Marietta) today announced that the state will spend nearly $254,000 to support local programs in her district, including housing assistance for low income residents and renovations to the Cambridge Developmental Center.

$200,000 will go toward repairing homes for low income residents of Guernsey, Monroe, Washington, Noble and Morgan Counties. 2 separate agencies will receive money under today’s grants.

“These dollars will help keep Ohioans in their homes and off of the streets,” said Rep. Garrison. “The Housing Assistance Grant Program provides vital funds that create housing options for low-income individuals. I’m optimistic that these funds will enhance the network of nonprofit housing agencies that continue to work with and support those most in need.”

The money is through Ohio’s Housing Assistance Grant program. Working in partnership with the Low and Moderate Income Housing Trust Fund, two area agencies will receive money to employ local contractors to carry out emergency home repairs for the city’s most vulnerable residents.

Community Action Program of Washington-Morgan Counties will receive $70,000 to provide emergency home repairs and handicapped accessibility modifications to low income residents. The grant will allow them to serve 20 households in the area.

G.M.N Tri-County Community Action Committee will receive $128,000 for similar projects. They will be able to serve 33 households.

The grants were approved by the State Controlling Board.

Rep. Garrison also announced that the Board this afternoon approved state money to renovate 5 residential buildings at the Cambridge Developmental Center.

“I am pleased to see the state’s continued support of the Cambridge Developmental Center,” said Rep. Garrison. “This facility is vitally important to our community. These renovations will allow the Center to continue its tradition of providing services to a vulnerable population in Guernsey County.”

The Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities will spend $219,000 on the renovations, which include replacing 24 exterior doors and frames and 16 corridor fire doors in the residential buildings. The doors are 30 years old and have experienced more than the usual wear and tear. Most no longer work properly.

The Cambridge Developmental Center is a state Intermediate Care facility that serves adults with developmental disabilities. Most of the people who live at the center are diagnosed with severe and profound developmental disabilities and need extensive support in the areas of daily living, health care, and social skills development.
