Garrison Announces Exit from Secretary of State Race

January 30, 2010

State Representative Jennifer Garrison, announced today she will not seek the Democratic nomination for Ohio Secretary of State.

“I have truly enjoyed meeting Ohioans from all walks of life during the 6 month campaign. Ohio is blessed to have a diverse landscape and people. I feel thankful and humbled by the support I have received from my colleagues, labor and Ohioans.” Garrison said.

“While I have determined this is not the right time for me and my family to seek this office, my utmost hope is that the voters will challenge all Secretary of State Candidates to explain how they will increase voter participation and facilitate business growth in Ohio.”

Garrison continued by saying, “I ask the next Secretary of State to be committed to the principles of transparent and fair elections and to concentrate on increasing voter participation. House Bill 260, otherwise known as the Elections Enhancement Bill is a good start. This legislation requires automatic voter registration every time an Ohioan touches state government, whether through renewing a driver’s license or applying for state benefits. This bill goes a long way toward increasing voter
participation and reducing allegations of fraud within the voter registration
process. I ask both Republican and Democratic candidates to commit their
support for this bill.”

Garrison does not plan to seek re-election to the Ohio House of Representatives.

The Theatre at Marietta College Opens the Musical Quilters

January 27, 2010

The Theatre at Marietta College continues its 2009-2010 season “Pieces of Lives, Journeys through Time” with the musical Quilters. The six show run opens on Thursday, February 4 at 8:00pm. Performances continue on February 5, 6, 12, and 13 at 8:00pm and conclude on February 14 at 2:00pm. All performances are in the Friederich Theatre of the Hermann Fine Arts Center at the corner of Fourth and Butler streets on the Marietta College Campus.

The Theatre and Music Departments celebrate Marietta College’s 175th anniversary with this uplifting musical about a pioneer woman who gifts a Legacy Quilt to her daughters. A series of tales and songs richly endow each quilt block with meaning and emotion. Presented in conjunction with the Art exhibition “Women in Fiber: from Craft to Art” Jan. 23 - Feb. 21 in the Hermann Fine Arts Center 3rd floor gallery.

The musical Quilters has its beginnings in the book The Quilters: Women in Domestic Art by Patricia Cooper and Norma Bradley Allen. Quilters debuted at the Denver Center Theatre Company 1982 and moved to Broadway in 1984. The Broadway production received Tony nominations for best musical, best book, and best score. The Washington Post remarked that the show’s “greatest strength is its unassuming honesty.”

The Marietta College production is directed by Assistant Professor Jeffrey M. Cordell. Of the production Cordell says, “This musical speaks to me—and I imagine to so many people who encounter it—because I was raised by women who sew, crochet, embroider, and knit. My mother made most of my play clothes as a child and then turned those memories into quilts which have kept me warm ever since. Quilters is a powerful musical because it is based on facts and tells true stories about the beauty and strength pioneer women found in themselves, in their families, and in the daily work of their hands. We are eager to share Quilters with our community in this historic pioneer area because it is family friendly, has spirited and memorable music, and just may be the beginning of a new quilting or story telling legacy.” The Marietta College production also features music direction by Dr. David M. Tadlock and choreography by Lori Patton.

Tickets may be reserved by calling the Theatre at Marietta College Box Office at 740-376-4678 or purchased before the show. Ticket prices are $10.00 for adults, $9.00 for seniors, and $8.00 for students. Tickets for Marietta College students and employees are free. For more information, contact Dorothy Leifheit at 740-376-4688 or dwl001@marietta.edu.

Dog License Application Deadline Nearing

January 26, 2010

Dog licenses for 2010 are on sale in the County Auditor’s Office. Ohio law requires that every dog owner purchase a license for all dogs three months of age or older. The deadline this year for purchasing a dog license without a penalty is Monday, February 1, 2010.

The cost of a license is $12.00 per dog. Qualifying applicants who are professionally engaged in the breeding of dogs for hunting or sale may obtain a kennel license for $60.00 including five tags with a $1.00 fee per additional tag.

As a courtesy, the Auditor’s Office attempted to mail applications on November 30 to all owners with 2009 licenses. However, the failure to receive an application does not waive the owner’s responsibility to obtain a license in a timely manner.

Persons can acquire 2010 licenses by mail without receiving the application form by sending the license fee along with the owner’s name, address and phone number along with the dog’s age, sex, breed, color and length of hair to the Auditor’s Office at 205 Putnam Street, Marietta.

If you fail to meet the registration deadline, you will be subject to a penalty that is equal to the cost of the license. So, it is important that you register your dog on or before the February 1 deadline.

Proceeds from the sale of dog licenses are used to fund the operations of the Dog Warden and a part of the Humane Society with the remaining funds used to conduct the dog licensing process.

If you have any questions, please call the Auditor’s Office at 373-6623, ext 264.

Statement of Rep. Jennifer Garrison on Governor's State of the State Address

January 26, 2010

State Representative Jennifer Garrison (D-Marietta) released the following statement this afternoon in response to the Governor’s State of the State Address:

“I was glad to hear the Governor focus his speech on the issues Ohioans care about – creating jobs. Since Ohio is number one in the nation in creating advanced energy jobs, I was pleased to see the Governor’s plan focus on that strength. By creating incentives for businesses to open and expand in Ohio, especially in the advanced and renewable energy field, we are rebuilding a strong foundation for our state’s economy to grow and prosper for generations to come.

Our long-term investments in education are already showing results. Education Week currently ranks Ohio 1st in the Midwest and 5th in the nation in terms of school quality, and the Education Commission of the States just today announced Ohio’s system of education, with reforms included in last year’s budget bill, as the most innovative public school system in the country.”
