Funds will improve area housing conditions, renovate Cambridge Developmental Center

State Representative Jennifer Garrison (D-Marietta) today announced that the state will spend nearly $254,000 to support local programs in her district, including housing assistance for low income residents and renovations to the Cambridge Developmental Center.

$200,000 will go toward repairing homes for low income residents of Guernsey, Monroe, Washington, Noble and Morgan Counties. 2 separate agencies will receive money under today’s grants.

“These dollars will help keep Ohioans in their homes and off of the streets,” said Rep. Garrison. “The Housing Assistance Grant Program provides vital funds that create housing options for low-income individuals. I’m optimistic that these funds will enhance the network of nonprofit housing agencies that continue to work with and support those most in need.”

The money is through Ohio’s Housing Assistance Grant program. Working in partnership with the Low and Moderate Income Housing Trust Fund, two area agencies will receive money to employ local contractors to carry out emergency home repairs for the city’s most vulnerable residents.

Community Action Program of Washington-Morgan Counties will receive $70,000 to provide emergency home repairs and handicapped accessibility modifications to low income residents. The grant will allow them to serve 20 households in the area.

G.M.N Tri-County Community Action Committee will receive $128,000 for similar projects. They will be able to serve 33 households.

The grants were approved by the State Controlling Board.

Rep. Garrison also announced that the Board this afternoon approved state money to renovate 5 residential buildings at the Cambridge Developmental Center.

“I am pleased to see the state’s continued support of the Cambridge Developmental Center,” said Rep. Garrison. “This facility is vitally important to our community. These renovations will allow the Center to continue its tradition of providing services to a vulnerable population in Guernsey County.”

The Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities will spend $219,000 on the renovations, which include replacing 24 exterior doors and frames and 16 corridor fire doors in the residential buildings. The doors are 30 years old and have experienced more than the usual wear and tear. Most no longer work properly.

The Cambridge Developmental Center is a state Intermediate Care facility that serves adults with developmental disabilities. Most of the people who live at the center are diagnosed with severe and profound developmental disabilities and need extensive support in the areas of daily living, health care, and social skills development.
